What goes into a concrete retaining wall in El Cerrito?
Concrete retaining walls in El Cerrito, CA hold back a slope with a steel-reinforced upright stem standing on a wide footing, so the hill stays put and you get back level, usable yard.
Most calls start with a slope that keeps creeping toward the patio or an old wall that's leaning and wet along the bottom. The price moves with the wall's height and length, how much dirt has to come out, how easy it is to get a crew and a truck back there, and whether a driveway or parking sits above it. The schedule turns mostly on the engineer's design and the city's review, because we don't pour until both are done. I'll give you your own number at the estimate.
How we build a concrete retaining wall
We build to the engineer's drawing, and most of my attention goes to what ends up behind the wall. Our crew digs out for the footing, the wide base the wall stands on, sets the rebar, the steel that lets the concrete take the push of the hill, then forms and pours the stem. Behind it goes drainage gravel wrapped in filter fabric, with perforated drains and outlets that carry water out, because water with nowhere to go just pushes. Then we backfill the way the drawing calls for. If the budget gets tight, cut the fancy finish on the face before you cut the gravel and drains, since nobody sees those on day one and they decide whether the wall stays put.
A new wall usually changes the ground on both sides of it. When cutting back the slope makes room for a shed or a studio, we can pour the slab for it through our concrete floor installation work, and if the wall finally gives you enough level yard for a pool, our concrete pool decks are built to send water away from the house and toward a drain.
What El Cerrito asks of a concrete retaining wall
In El Cerrito, the city's Building Division requires a permit for a wall of any height that carries vehicles or parking, and exempts a wall holding back 30 inches or less of level ground. A permitted wall has to be designed by a licensed architect or a registered civil or structural engineer, who sends the city an evaluation of the wall's stability, so plan on a design step before anything gets poured. Those limits come from an older city ordinance, so the Building Division has the final word on current rules, and when it's not clear your wall needs a permit, I check with the city before I price it. When it does, we pull the permit under our license and book the inspections.
Hillside lots add steps. Moving more than 50 cubic yards of soil or rock takes a separate grading permit, filed together with the building permit, and the city keeps a slide and seismic study map of areas that need extra study, so I look your lot up on it early. We meet the same steep backyards on jobs in Kensington and Berkeley, where the digging and hauling are a big share of the work too.

What happens after you call El Cerrito Concrete about a wall in El Cerrito?
Call or send the form
Call (510) 973-2452 or send the form with a few words about the slope. We set a time for me to come out.
I look at the slope
I walk the site, ask what the wall has to hold back and what will sit above it, and give you the estimate on the spot. You leave the visit with a number instead of waiting for one.
Permit, pour and clean up
Once the engineer's drawing is ready, we take care of the permit and inspections, then prep, form and pour. Any digging under the city's grading permit happens 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays unless the City Engineer approves other hours, and we leave the site clean.
Why El Cerrito homeowners call El Cerrito Concrete for retaining walls
I write your estimate myself
I come out to see the job and write the estimate, and when we build, our crew does the work with me on site running it. The person who priced the drain line is standing there when it goes in.
City crew habits, since 2023
I learned concrete on a city crew, pouring sidewalk, curb and gutter to the city's drawings, and started El Cerrito Concrete in 2023. Building to somebody else's plans is old habit, and a wall drawn by an engineer needs exactly that.
Fully licensed and insured
We're fully licensed and insured. In California, the Contractors State License Board licenses concrete contractors for forming, pouring, placing and finishing, so it's fair to ask any bidder about theirs.
The wall you see is the easy part. Book a visit and I'll look at what goes behind it.

Questions about retaining walls in El Cerrito
How much does a concrete retaining wall cost in the Bay Area?
A retaining wall in the Bay Area usually costs about $50 to $65 per square foot, which is the going rate around here, not a quote from us. Height, how much digging and hauling it takes, access and what sits above the wall push yours up or down, and I'll put a real number on it when I see the slope.
Do I need a permit for a short retaining wall in El Cerrito?
You might not need a building permit, but the city says a wall that's exempt can still need Planning or Public Works review. Call the city before you build, or let me ask when I come out to price it.
Why does drainage matter behind a concrete retaining wall?
Water trapped behind a wall can greatly increase the load on it and cause leaks. That's why concrete guidance calls for drainage gravel with filter fabric or a graded filter, perforated drain outlets and surface drainage, with the outlets kept working, so ask every bidder how they handle the water.
What causes a retaining wall to fail after it's built?
A later change to the yard can do it even when the concrete is strong. Concrete guidance warns that changing the backfill, adding a driveway near the wall or letting water build up behind it can undo what the wall was designed for, so tell me about any of that before the drawing gets made.
How do I know if a contractor can do the digging for my retaining wall in El Cerrito?
The city requires anyone doing grading work to hold a valid Class A General Engineering or Class C-12 Earthwork and Paving license. Ask each bidder who will do the digging and which license that person holds.
Does a landslide or earthquake hazard zone affect a retaining wall project in California?
It can. California maps zones for liquefaction and earthquake-induced landslides, and owners in those zones may be required to study and reduce the hazard during local permitting, which adds steps to a wall project.
Concrete work that goes with a new wall
Concrete floor installation
The level ground a wall creates is often the spot for a workshop or garden room, and that floor needs packed ground and steel before the pour.
Concrete pool decks
If the wall levels enough backyard for a pool, the deck around it is the next pour, and it needs to stay flat and drain where you want.
Send us photos of your slope
Photos of the slope, the wall's rough length and height, and whether cars park above it let me show up knowing which questions to ask.
